Teresa Heartchild and World Down’s Syndrome Day

March 24, 2024 1 Comment

World Down’s Syndrome was last week and we missed it.   But it’s still worth noting as RxISK has a link to it through Teresa Heartchild along with Bill and Franke James.

We have had a number of posts on RxISK about Teresa – Quality of Care and Human Rights should be for Everyone.  There are several more on DavidHealy.org – the most recent being Uplifting 2024.

These celebrate one of the most extraordinary books you could ever read.

Since the book has come out Teresa has been going from strength to strength.

Franke Franke has had an op-ed published in the The Toronto Star.  This significance of this is the change in tone – the paper looks like its getting behind Teresa and Franke rather than just reporting things.
  • Toronto Star: My sister was sent to a nursing home against her will.
She has also release Teresa’s Video celebrating the tenth anniversary of her Change.org petition, which was launched on World Down Syndrome Day 2014.

In the very very near future there will be an audiobook available which is distinct from the average audio book.  There are multiple participants playing different characters in the book – its a book filled with dramatic dialogue so an audio book with real actors is particularly appropriate.

This development also brings out one of the benefits of an independent publishing platform like Samizdat for instance or your own if you have one which is that getting actors to play the parts made it clear that bits of the book that were not contributing to the story could be omitted while other bits edited out needed bringing back in.

Compared with conventional publishing platform, it is now possible to edit a book on the spot and Bill has done so on many occasions with Freeing Teresa so that the already perfect book is now even more perfect.

The audio book might be worth thinking about for anyone you know has a lot of driving to do – or who just can’t get to sleep.  The only problem with that latter suggestion is the story is so dramatic some readers like me won’t be able able stop and get to sleep.

    Always touched by Freeing Teresa.

Very good newspaper article and video of Teresa

As I was warned I might have a Down’s baby, and not in a nice way, the impression I was given was probably best not to keep the baby. This was at 20 weeks, I was 41, and already bonded.

It had occurred to me before I received the ‘phone call that I might have a Down’s baby. I knew a black Downs child in our small village, the grand-daughter of the local land-owner. His son had met a black model in New York and brought her to live in their country mansion. I got to know the family quite well. The small child was lovely and this is when I began thinking about Downs.

I had decided that I would be having my baby and to get this ‘phone call, and it upset me greatly.
It upset me because the tone was completely out of order.

I don’t listen to audiobooks in the car, as I like looking at the Scottish scenery and before I go to sleep it is usually the news.

I have the freedom to listen to the Freeing Teresa audiobook when ever I like. All day if I want to.
I am already quite well trained in this area loving dramas, plays and documentaries on the radio and from the computer.

I am really enthusiastic about getting the audiobook. Hope it comes soon.

And well-done Franke, Bill, and most of all, Teresa.
