Editorial Note: This post has just arrived. We need to know if the treatment outlined makes any difference to others with PFS, PSSD and PRSD. It looks safe to test. You can help us by testing it if you have one of these conditions. We’d also like to know if you are aware of any reasons why it might not be helpful – others have tried it – or if you think it could be helpful any reasons how it helps. See below.
I’ve had post-finasteride syndrome (PFS) for nearly 20 years. I am now 42.
After trying quite a few regimens over the years and all of them failing to fix me I had given up on ever having a normal sex life again. I have never tried anything dangerous or crazy, but I have explored with anabolic steroid use figuring if anything could fix me, this could.
I have read everyone’s posts on why DHT is messed up but one thing that confused me is if it is messed up, why are DHT levels for the most part normal? Not only DHT, but other androgens as well. And the most confusing question of all is, when you add more androgens to the mix, why do the symptoms get worse?
When I was in my early 30’s, I started working out. No matter how hard I worked out, I could not gain any muscle or strength. A friend of mine recommended a supplement called N.O. Explode. He said it would give me a good pump and help with blood flow. I started taking it. The maximum amount recommended was 3 scoops a day, so that’s what I took.
After a month or two, I noticed that my sex drive started getting stronger. I never associated the supplement with it. I just thought it was the time since I had taken the Propecia and me working out and being healthy that was making things better. I never even looked at the label to see what was in the supplement.
I eventually had prostate problems due to some of the steroids that I had taken and had to start seeing a Urologist. He put me on this medicine called Jalyn. Yep, I got burned again with finasteride. The only reason I caught it was because I started developing gynecomastia. I was not on it long, but it did bring me downhill a bit, but not nearly as bad as the first time all those years ago. The gynecomastia only stayed on the left side of my chest, the right side cleared on its own. Frustrated, I was determined to look for answers.
One day I read a post where someone asked “What are we missing here? We need to think outside the box.” That got my attention. I started exploring another avenue. I started by looking at my own symptoms, individually. The first one I looked at was muscle atrophy. I didn’t have muscle wasting like some guys, but I cannot build any muscle apart from taking anabolic steroids. No matter how hard I work out. If anything, I get weaker.
So, I researched the building blocks of muscle to see what androgen it would bring up. Turns out, it’s not androgens. It’s amino acids. Amino acids are the building and maintaining blocks of our bodies. I continued to research not knowing anything about amino acids and was able to pull two up called L-Citrulline and L-Arginine.
On a hunch I went to the store and bought the two but thinking in the back of my mind I wasn’t going to try something that someone else hadn’t already tried. I took them home and put them on the refrigerator. They stayed there a few weeks until my son one day asked me if I would start working out with him. I figured I would. I had just got a juicer and juiced some fresh beets and I mixed the two acids with the beets and some fresh squeezed oranges to sweeten them in and took them. I only took them on Monday and Tuesday that week and got distracted and didn’t take them again.
Thursday rolled around, and I was in the mood, so my wife and I had some alone time. About 30 minutes to an hour later, my refractory period kicked in and I was able to have sex again. That hadn’t happened in years. For the next 3 days I had a normal sex life again. I was shocked. By Sunday, things came back to PFS normal for me, but I was in awe at what had happened. I knew it must have been the acids. I went and looked at the N.O. Explode that I had taken several years back and turned out it has quite a few amino acids in it. I finally made the connection on what had helped me before.
I started back on the acids right away hoping things would be normal again but they weren’t. They did however begin to improve. Refractory period was down to hours instead of days. Now the hours of the refractory period are very consistent.
I started looking up my other symptoms and amino acids that control that part of the body and found out the two I had taken weren’t even for muscle growth. They target the pituitary gland and the production of nitric oxide. Two necessary things for sex. I continued research and found one that was for muscle growth called BCAA’s or Branched Chain Amino Acids. It’s a mixture that has 3 in it for muscle growth and one for brain activity. I added this one to the mix right away while continuing to juice fresh beets and mix the acids with them.
Early on in PFS I felt that the connection between my mind and my groin was dead, then years later developed a small connection. Soon after I started the BCAA’s I felt a much stronger connection again. Like the thoughts or the visual aspect was sending messages down stairs again. I’ll be honest, I had forgotten what that was like.
This summer I have been wearing shorts pretty much nonstop, but I put on a pair of pants the other day to go to an event and my legs had gotten thicker. It almost looked like I was wearing skinny jeans, but my weight was the same and my waist size was the same. My muscles had actually grown a little. The gynecomastia on the left side of my chest started getting less tender. Someone accidentally hit me there the other day which would normally hurt very badly, and I barely felt it. The excess fat on my upper torso has cut back a little, but my weight has maintained.
I had bad brain fog before. I would go through a traffic light and couldn’t even remember if it was green or red. I would joke with my wife that I was losing my mind and I wasn’t even connecting it with PFS. I have noticed this has been much better since.
I quit taking the acids for three weeks and went and got an Amino Acid Plasma Panel done. Funny thing is that during those three weeks, my symptoms did not reverse (back to PFS hell) as I expected, but continued to stay the same as they were when I discontinued the supplements. The panel came back fairly normal, but after my symptoms continued to stay good, I kind of expected it to be somewhat normal.
There were 3 things that were abnormal. Two of them were acids that were a little high and one was a side chain of some kind that was low. In saying that, they may have been normal anyway. I can’t say if they were low before, or if taking the acids just kick started something in my system that just wasn’t working like it was supposed to. I’m not a doctor. For that matter, I don’t even have a college education and didn’t do great in school. I’ll leave the science to the professionals. All I know is that for two months now, since the beginning of August when this all started, I’ve been a lot better than I was.
I read a post on propeciahelp.com the other day where a guy took L-Histidine one time and had a full three-day recovery like I did. From what I have found, this particular acid is a precursor to histamine and helps with allergies. It is also an antioxidant and helps getting toxins out of the body. Why this helped that man have a three-day recovery makes no sense, but with having a three-day complete recovery myself, I know how he feels.
That brings me up to date with my findings. I am going to take other acids and continue to monitor my improvements as I am keeping a log. What I am taking so far is L-Citrulline, L-Arginine, L-Tryptophan, L-Carnitine and the BCAA’s (L-Valine, L-Isoleucine, L-Leucine, L-Glutamine).
Editorial Note: It seems likely others with PFS, PSSD and PRSD have tried amino acids like this. We’d like to hear from you if you have. Three day recoveries like the ones mentioned here have been reported by many people in response to a number of different medicines – or after stopping a number of different medicines.
